Strategic foresight7/28/2023 ![]() Rather than trying to accurately forecast future outcomes, the objective of strategic foresight is to investigate it aims to expand consideration for a range of potential developments, opportunities and challenges that the future could present. This is where strategic foresight comes in. However, when we want to envision a future in which there is a high degree of uncertainty, it becomes far more difficult to forecast effectively. A classic example is meteorologists, who use forecasting to make predictions about the weather based on past and present data. We can forecast something that has a high accuracy of probability, such as how long it will take to drive to work in the morning. Unlike forecasting, foresight explores the range of possible futures that may materialize. These ideas about the future are then used to design potential solutions, which enable governments and businesses to prepare or implement strategies to mitigate future consequences. It does so by using ideas about possible futures to develop action plans.Īlso known as corporate foresight in the private sector, strategic foresight considers what opportunities and challenges could arise from a variety of plausible futures. Strategic foresight is a systematic and planning-oriented approach to prepare for anticipated changes in the long run. ![]() In times of rising uncertainty, there are tools that can help organizations better prepare themselves for the unexpected. It underlines the importance of joined up internal and external policies and calls for a comprehensive approach. Large-scale misinformation, powered by new tools and online platforms, will pose increasing challenges to democratic systems and drive a new type of information warfare. ![]() Pressure on democracy and values: As of 2020, 34% of the world’s population was living in countries where democratic governance was declining and only 4% in countries that were becoming more democratic. Europe’s global leadership ambition in the twin transitions could position it strongly in an emerging lucrative market and create new types of work, for example green jobs, in both established and emerging sectors. Increased connectivity of objects, places and people will result in new products, services, business models, and life and work patterns. By 2050, 200 million people will be in need of humanitarian assistance partly due to ecological effects.ĭigital hyperconnectivity and technological transformations: The number of connected devices globally might increase from 30.4 billion in 2020 to 200 billion in 2030. ![]() The 2021 Strategic Foresight Report focuses on key global megatrends that will continue to affect the EU in the coming decades: from climate change, technological acceleration and digitalisation, to major economic, geopolitical and demographic shifts.Ĭlimate change and other environmental challenges: Global warming will probably surpass 1.5℃ in the next 20 years and head towards 2℃ by mid‑century, worsening the pressure on water and food safety worldwide.
